Terry’s words about Shine On (written 1995): After a week of relentless rain, the sun appears, and the inner sun comes out of hiding.  Shine yours. Remember the fire that burns within. “Shine On” is fun to sing in song circles.  It feels like sharing a cup of joy.

Shine On – Terry Garthwaite

I can feel the heat
Like a ball of fire
Like the heavenly sound
Of a gospel choir
I can see the light
Like a brand new day
Like a bolt of lightening
It takes my Breath away.

(Chorus)
Shine on, shine on, shine on
You heavenly light
Shine on, shine on, shine on

And I can hear the sound
Like a charming bell
Like a soft reminder
That all is well.
I can feel the beat
Like the wings of a dove
Like a heart on fire
Full of the light of love.

(Chorus – Shine on etc.)

(Bridge)
Burning bright
Making day from night
It’s such a welcome sight
Here comes the light.
Here comes the light,
Here comes the sun
Here comes the heat
This is heaven.

Sara writes:  I had the pleasure of attending a house concert in Fall 2025 where Terry Garthwaite was singing with Barbara Higbie and Elise Witt in their trio “Natural Rhythms”.  Wow!  What a powerful experience.  Terry sang Shine On at this gathering and gave me her blessings to teach any material that she shared that day. This song is very satisfying to sing, with or without harmonies and bridge.

Terry Garthwaite lives in San Anselmo, CA and performs or leads circles in the bay area.  (Bio and photo excerpted from Terry’s website): Terry Garthwaite is an internationally known singer, songwriter, composer, producer, and teacher. Her recording career dates back to the late 1960s when she and Toni Brown formed the rock group Joy of Cooking.
