Sara’s Note: Samara released this video quickly, to share in time for Winter Solstice). You will notice that the second layer on the video has different lyrics. I have recorded a clip of the song without added harmonies with Samara’s preferred lyrics (written out below.) (Track by Sara Stutz.)
Here is Samara, singing Resilient Flame/ Invincible Summer with different (less preferred, see notes below) lyrics for the second layer:
Lyrics:
1. In the midst of winter,
I found there was within me,
an invincible summer.
2. Deep down I know,
the light will grow,
and awaken seeds we sow.
3. Oh resilient flame keeps burning,
trust within the light returning.
This layer song was written by Samara in 2023 as she searched for inspiration for a winter solstice song and found her verse one in a beautiful Albert Camus quote “In the midst of winter, I found there was within me, an invincible summer.” which was excerpted from his collection of Essays “Return to Tipasa”, published in 1951.
There are longer forms of this essay which have been widely associated with Camus, however, upon further research, it appears that only the one sentence “In the midst of winter I found there was within me, an invincible summer.” originated from Camus. Here is the essay (without writer attribution) inspired by the Camus quote for your reference:
“In the midst of hate,
I found there was, within me,
an invincible love.
In the midst of tears,
I found there was, within me,
an invincible smile.
In the midst of chaos,
I found there was, within me,
an invincible calm.
I realized, through it all,
that in the midst of winter,
I found there was, within me,
an invincible summer.
And that makes me happy.
For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me,
within me, there’s something stronger – something better, pushing right back.“
