These are the words, big and bold, across the top of Sarina Partridge’s website (view it here: https://sarinapartridge.com/) and those words really encapsulate her warm, inviting style of song leadership. Sarina has traveled around the world to study with master folk singers, and has toured with the traveling ensemble Northern Harmony abroad and in the USA. Sarina performs and teaches with several music projects/ensembles (Heartwood, Nanilo) and as a solo artist and educator; teaches at music camps (Village Harmony, Songroots, Folklore Village); and leads regular community sings and workshops in and around Minneapolis, where she is based. We have the good fortune to sing with her during her travels to California!
Living Room Choir was founded in 2015 and is part of the international Ubuntu Choirs Network. Founded by Kaitie Ty Warren and now co-led by Kaitie Ty Warren and Sara Stutz, LRC meets weekly in El Cerrito and also mixes and mingles with the global singing community. Over the last decade LRC has hosted many wonderful songleaders (see our guest leader archive here). Sara and Kaitie both had the pleasure of singing with Sarina recently at an event in Canada, and we can’t wait to have her here in California!
This event is hosted by Kaitie, Sara and Deborah of Living Room Choir, and with Living Room Choir members from across many years. Here are some things to know about Living Room Choir culture and logistics:
Kids’ Corner available (crafting for all ages, suggested $5-15 donation) all ages welcome; there are changing tables and toddler sized toilets available in the bathrooms
no musical experience necessary; everything taught by oral tradition
we are essentially a non-binary choir: folx of all genders are welcome to pick the vocal parts that work for them, rather than being assigned to high/low sections
please come scent free (some members are highly sensitive)
the venue is 1 mile from El Cerrito Plaza BART station
there is plenty of free street (residential) parking. There is no designated handicap parking on the street, but we manually put out two disabled placard signs to save spots near the entrance for those who need it
Living Room Choir meets and sings on unceded xučyun (Huichin) home territory (what is now known as Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda, Piedmont, Emeryville and Albany, California). The Chochenyo speaking Lisjan Ohlone people, have lived on this land for thousands of years. Choir leaders pay voluntary Shuumi land tax, and you can too: https://sogoreate-landtrust.org/
Please join us. All ages welcome. No sight reading necessary. We can’t wait to sing with you!
