Eileen leading Gonna Work On Justice, live at a private event:
Below is a single line breakdown, using “people” instead of “spirit” on part 2 and including one harmony option:
This song invites many harmonies and improvisations and definitely gets the room up and moving. This song is also very new and may have more changes or additions along the way.
Lyrics:
(This is a “zipper song” – you can insert different lyrics. It is also a layer song with two parts interlocking)
1. Gonna work on justice (or insert other words: ex. healing, joy, laughter, learning, science),
Gonna work on justice,
Gonna work on justice,
And it’s gonna work on me.
2. Gonna work together with the spirit (*or “people”),
Gonna work together with the spirit
Oh justice (or other zipper word),
It’s gonna work on me
*Sara opts (with Eileen’s permission) to substitute “People” for “Spirit” in this song and you are welcome to teach the song with either lyric.
Eileen is prolific songwriter and performer and describes herself as a Song catcher, Song Leader and Priestess. We are delighted that Eileen is part of Grace Notes and Living Room Choir and are grateful for the enthusiastic support that Eileen brings to the Living Room. Sara writes: I had the great good fortune to attend a gathering in February 2025 where our very own Living Room Choir member, Eileen Hazel, was debuting this song. Eileen noted that she originally wrote this song one morning in the kitchen with the words “Gonna work on breakfast” and realized that she’d created a great activism song. Sara has taken this song out on the streets and the people understandably loved it.
It has already become a staple song for Taking It Outside as well!
