teaching tracks for “our” version at the bottom of this page.

Katie Sontag, a friend of ours from Eugene OR, fellow Pandemic-mama and Ubuntu Choirs/CCLT songleader, wrote this song in 2020 as a tongue in cheek lockdown Christmas carol. It does what we wish more songs did: hold the complexity of life. Sometimes everything sucks…and also, I love you.

Katie Sontag’s website includes information on the song, this cute music video, and teaching tracks. See Katie’s page for this song on her website: https://katiesontag.com/everything-sucks-but-i-love-you The song is also featured in her songbook which includes the sheet music, and her merch store’s link is at the top of this page.

Below are teaching tracks created by Kaitie Ty Warren for Living Room Choir. The arrangement is slightly modified to not use a guitar, and one interval has been changed for the ease of singing. (These changes are sanctioned by Katie Sontag).

We have also changed the lyrics (again, sanctioned by Katie Sontag) to be more squarely G-Rated, since we are an all ages choir. The Teaching Tracks below, recorded by Kaitie Ty Warren, reflect our Living Room Choir version. If you want the original, please visit Katie Sontag’s website and consider buying her beautiful book, too.

This song is a zipper song, meaning it’s designed to accommodate a variety of lyrics in place of “everything”. It’s fun to have singers offer their suggestions of what to complain about while you’re singing, and the content might be different day to day. You know…just like life.

Lyrics (for the more G-rated variation):

Tenor:
Everything’s yuck, but I love you
Everything’s yuck, but I still care
Everything’s yuck, but I love you, I love, I love you
ba-doom-doom-doom

Soprano:
Everything’s yuck
Everything’s yuck
Everything’s – yuck – but I love you, I love you

Bass:
Everything’s
Really yuck
Everything’s yuck, but I love you, I love you

Alto:
Oh, everything’s really yuck right now
Don’t need to tell you how
Everything’s yuck; I hate it, but I love you, I love you

Everything’s Yuck – ALL
